The concept of nature is kind of funny. Many of us want to be part of it but nature only exists, by definition, as something we’re excluded from. There are old stories about how we were involuntarily separated from the natural world a long time ago—they tell of a longing that has persisted.

Today, when we’re perhaps as alienated as we’ve ever been, we often leverage fantasies of nature—appealing to our innate desire to return—to sell cars, vacations, and backpacks to each other. But how are we not nature? We’re made out of the same stuff as mountains and lakes and stars. Each of us is a little ecosystem. Does the separation, like all concepts, only exist in our minds?

Maybe the shortest route to the natural world is out of our heads and into our bodies, where we can feel our hearts and lungs working as we move across the surface of the earth.
